Heli-Skiing

From July to September during the Portillo ski season, depending on snow and weather conditions, guests who enjoy Heli-skiing will be offered the services of a Eurocopter AS350 B3 helicopter.   Heli services are provided by the company Suma Air, which will allow access to fresh powder snow in the mountains that surround the resort. Portillo will be responsible for providing a professional in charge of guiding skiers during Heli-ski trips.

Eurocopter’s AS350 B3 helicopter maintains the following characteristics:

  • Capacity of 4 passengers + Guide + Pilot
  • Low noise level
  • Leather interior
  • GPS navigation system
  • Luggage compartment
Important

Although the services of the helicopters may be offered by Ski Portillo S.A., the operation of the helicopters is the sole and exclusive responsibility of Suma Air – a company dedicated to the air transportation of passengers by helicopter. Accordingly, Ski Portillo S.A. does not assume any responsibility for the previously mentioned services.

Heli-ski reservations

1. A guest wishing to Heli-ski in Portillo may add his or her name to the list of potential Heli-ski participants in the following ways:

  • By requesting to be added to the list at the time the hotel reservation is made, or in writing, by email heliski@skiportillo.com, at any time before check-in
  • By requesting to be added to the list upon arrival in Portillo (Assistant Manager office).

2. Having one’s name on the list of potential Heli-ski participants does not guarantee the guest a Heli-ski trip. This will depend upon:

  • Snow conditions.
  • Priority due to position on the potential Heli-ski participant list.
  • Flight clearance by helicopter pilot – Suma Air’s pilots will have absolute authority over clearing helicopters for any and every flight.
  • Emergency and/or rescue services – Emergencies will always have priority over all other uses of the helicopter.

3. Guests may only add their name to the list of potential participants one time and must have a Portillo reservation with a paid deposit to do so.

4. Upon Saturday arrival in Portillo, we require that each guest who has added their name to the potential participants list stop by Alfredo Torres, Assistant Manager, office in the lobby to confirm his or her intention to participate in a Heli-ski trip during that week.

5. The Heli-guide, or Portillo guide will publish the list of potential participants in Assistant Manager office on the first day of the ski week (Saturday) and will select groups and assign their tentative Heli-ski day/time in accordance with the positions of names on the list. At this point, in order to uphold the position, the guest will have to pay for the Heli-Ski service. Payment for Heli-Ski service is non-refundable except in cases when Heli-Skiing is not possible due to circumstances outlined above in item number 2.

6. Priority will be given to guests who have added their names to the list furthest in advance and have paid for the Heli-Ski service.

7. If there are more names on the list of potential participants than the maximum number of trips available during a given ski week, guests whose names are further down the list will not be able to participate in a Heli-ski trip. Extra Heli-ski trips will only be added when availability and conditions permit.

8. If Heli-ski trips cannot be made on every day of the week due to weather conditions or other reasons mentioned previously, priority will be given to guests who have reservations for that day. Prior reservations will be cancelled and must be re-newed.

Important
  • Portillo does not own or operate helicopters. Operation of the helicopter in Portillo is the exclusive responsibility of Suma Air.
  • Portillo CANNOT GUARANTEE that a guest will be able to participate in a Heli-ski trip in any given week. This will depend upon ALL of the factors previously mentioned.
  • Suma Air’s pilot will have full and absolute authority over the helicopter and is the authority who determines whether or not to carry-out each and every flight.
  • The guide provided by Portillo will determine whether or not the snow conditions are right for Heli-skiing on any given day of the ski season.
  • Heli-skiing requires a skill level and physical condition adequate for the type of terrain and snow conditions found in Heli-ski locations. Guides have the authority to turn-down any individual who he or she feels does not maintain the required skills and/or physical condition to safely participate in a Heli-ski trip.
  • Minors under the age of 18 who wish to participate in a Heli-ski trip must have the written consent of a parent or legal guardian
