TIPPING ETIQUETTE

Tipping is optional in Portillo; however it is customary in Chile to tip 10%. Many guests have asked us to give them some direction in the matter of who to tip and how much. The following suggestions are only a guideline. Of course tipping is not required in Portillo and you may always expect good friendly service with or without tips. But tipping is a nice way to show your appreciation for good service. The suggestions are based on what we think is about average. You may want to tip more if you have received some special service. There are other employees who are not on this list and who, at a given moment, may offer you some special service. We suggest that you tip them along the lines of what we are suggesting here for the most commonly tipped employees.

Dining room waiters: Waiters pool all their tips so you do not have to give tips to everyone who waited on you. Leave your tip with the waiter who was most with you and he will see that everyone gets their share. USD 8.00 per person per day.

Bar waitresses: 10% of the bill pay with the bill or put the amount on your signed check.

Bell Boy: USD 1.00 per bag.

Maid: USD 2.00 per person per day. Leave with the maid that you most work with or leave the tip in the room.

Boot Check: USD 5.00 per person per week leave directly with the Boot Boy on your checkout day.

Driver: 10% of the fare. Give directly to the driver.

Although these amounts are in dollars you may tip in Chilean or Argentine Pesos, Brazilian Reals, or your local currency.
